I undertook a self-initiated project to design a modern patient portal concept, with a core focus on three key principles: ADA compliance, a mobile-first approach, and web-safe practices. The goal was to create a fully customizable and intuitive app in Figma that could cater to the varied needs of healthcare users.

A meticulous focus on accessibility was central to this project. The design achieved an impressive 98% adherence to WCAG 2.1 guidelines, ensuring the portal would be inclusive for individuals with visual, motor, or cognitive impairments. Through comprehensive volunteer user testing and eight rounds of design iterations, we saw a 38% improvement in task completion rates for users who rely on assistive technologies like voice navigation. This outcome underscores the significant enhancements made to both usability and accessibility.

This project's mobile-first approach was a key component, ensuring a responsive and seamless experience on smaller screens. The design was specifically optimized for efficiency in low-connectivity environments, a critical factor for time-sensitive healthcare information.

This involved refining navigation, integrating larger touch targets, and optimizing asset loading for mobile use as well as cleaning up unnecessary animations and heavy javascript. These efforts resulted in a 10% reduction in page loading speeds. This focus on mobile performance ensures the portal is a reliable tool for all users, regardless of their device or network conditions, reinforcing the design's commitment to both accessibility and practicality.

Potential 98% adherence to WCAG 2.1 guidelines

This fact highlights a strong commitment to ADA compliance, ensuring the app is accessible to a wide range of users, including those with visual, motor, or cognitive impairments.

32% decrease in cognitive load

This stat demonstrates a significant improvement in usability, showing that a simplified workflow and decluttered interface made the app easier to use and understand.

38% improvement in task completion rates for users with assistive technologies

This result underscores the success of the design's focus on inclusivity, proving that specific UI and UX choices can dramatically enhance the experience for diverse audiences.

This project's user interface (UI) design was built on a modular design system to create a flexible and intuitive experience. Developed entirely in Figma, this system makes it easy to adjust branding, layouts, and accessibility features, ensuring the portal is highly adaptable for future development and different healthcare providers.

The modular approach significantly simplified core user tasks, such as appointment scheduling. By decluttering the interface and refining the user journey, the design successfully reduced the time it takes to schedule an appointment, as confirmed by user testing (Currently 5% avg. change, I'm pushing for more). This focus on streamlined workflows and a clean, customizable design system not only improves the user experience but also provides a scalable and developer-friendly solution.
